THE ACIDIC PREGNANCY

Today’s educative post is about the effect of Omega-3 fatty acids on pregnancy.

I told us that, at Pregnancy Support Foundation, this month was dedicated to the theme “NUTRITION IN PREGNANCY”.

If you have not read the post from last week and the week before, please do well to visit my profile and read my weekend posts (Fridays & Saturdays).

Importance of Omega-3 fatty acid to pregnant women

Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for pregnant women due to their role in fetal development, particularly in brain and eye development.

Omega-3s support the mother’s health during pregnancy by reducing the risk of preterm birth, promoting healthy birth weight, and potentially reducing the risk of postpartum depression.

Omega-3s contribute to the development of the baby’s nervous system and immune function.

Including sources of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet, such as fish or supplements, can help ensure optimal health outcomes for both the mother and the baby.

                     FOOD  SOURCES

In Nigeria, some food sources of omega-3 fatty acids include:

>>1. Fish:

Nigerian waters are rich in various fish species, such as mackerel (titus), sardines (bonga fish), catfish, and salmon. These fish are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

>>2. Crayfish:

Widely used in Nigerian cuisine, crayfish is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, among other nutrients.

>>3. Egusi (Melon seeds):

Egusi seeds are commonly used in soups and stews in Nigeria. They contain omega-3 fatty acids and are a nutritious addition to the diet.

>>4. Fluted pumpkin leaves (Ugu):

Ugu leaves are popular in Nigerian dishes, particularly in soups. They contain some omega-3 fatty acids along with other essential nutrients.

>>5. Groundnut (Peanuts):

Groundnuts are a common snack in Nigeria and are also used in various dishes. They contain some omega-3 fatty acids, although in smaller amounts compared to fish and seafood.

Incorporating these foods into the diet can help pregnant women and other intentional women obtain sufficient omega-3 fatty acids for optimal health.

If you plan to be pregnant soon or if you desire good health, don’t go a day without one of these foods above.
